HURLEY SCREEN CORP.
Lace and Grommet Theatre Screens

Installation Instructions
This screen has been carefully packed with the reflecting surface protected by paper or foam. It has been rolled on a stiff cardboard or metal core and packed in a shipping tube or wood case depending upon its size and weight. The screen should not be unrolled from the core except to install it in the frame.

1. Preparing to Unpack the Screen
The shipping container is marked to indicate the top of the screen and to give instructions as to whether the screen will unroll from stage right or left. Large screens should be properly located before removing to avoid unnecessary handling after removal from the shipping container.

2. Removing the Screen from the Shipping Container
The screen should not be lifted from the wood shipping case but should be handled by rolling the case on its side, after carefully removing the lid and making certain that all nails and splinters of wood that might damage the screen are removed. This eliminates the danger of a large screen sagging as it would if lifted by its ends alone.

For screens in shipping tubes, the end cap should be pried out at the end marked "top" and the screen carefully withdrawn. The lacing line will be found in this end of the shipping tube.

3. Preparing Temporary Loops
Make up temporary loops from the lacing line provided with the screen. All loops should be the same length, and each loop should be long enough to reach from the screen grommet to the hook on the frame when the screen will be in upright position. One loop for each two feet of screen width will be needed plus one additional loop for one of the corners - (example: for a 50 foot wide screen 26 loops are needed).

4. Providing Means of Supporting theScreen as it is Unrolled Across the Frame
A rolling dolly, or a plate and peg to insert in the bottom of the screen tube should be prepared before raising the screen to its vertical position. This will hold the screen at the proper height relative to the frame and relieve the strain that would otherwise fall on the stagehands working on the bottom of the screen. A swivel eye at the top of the screen mounting tube can perform the same function.

5. Raising the Screen to the Vertical Position
For very large screens and where block and fall or other hoisting equipment is available, it is advisable to raise the screen while it is still in the opened shipping case. Temporary ties must be used to keep the screen from falling out of the case. After the screen is in a vertical position, the temporary ties should be removed and the shipping case eased away until the screen rests on the dolly, plate or eye, - whichever has been provided.

CAUTION! Stage hands must support top, center, and bottom while the screen is being unrolled. Handle gently. DO NOT CRUSH OR PINCH. PROTECT THE FRONT SURFACE IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE.

6. Unrolling the Screen
Starting at the proper side, carefully begin to unroll the screen. Use loops about every two feet (each fifth grommet) to fasten the top of the screen in the frame. The screen should now be centered in the frame and secured in this position by several short ties placed at the corners and several intermediate places along the sides and bottom.

7. Permanent Lacing
Insert permanent lacing in top and sides, using loop-type lacing in the top, and loop or diagonal type lacing in the sides, depending upon how the hooks on the frame line up with the grommets in the screen webbing. Locate the screen in the frame so that it is evenly spaced from each side, and from the top and bottom, by adjustment of the lacing lines. Then, insert lacing lines in the bottom of the screen, beginning at the center and working toward the sides, tightening as you go.

8. Final Tensioning
Tighten the lacings; apply sufficient tension to remove any seam wrinkles. Increase tension uniformly on all sides of screen until the surface is properly smooth. Avoid excessive side tension onscreen. It maybe necessary to re-tighten the side and bottom lacings once or twice additionally as screen and lines relax into their natural equilibrium but this cannot be avoided by excessive tension at the first tightening.

Special Instructions
Mounting Screen in a Frame with Springs or Bungee Balls
Starting at the proper side, carefully begin to unroll the screen. Insert a spring or a bungee in the top corner grommet and also a few equally spaced along the side to hold the side in position as the screen is unrolled. Do not attampt to insert springs or bungee balls in every grommet as you proceed to unroll, but rather every fourth or fifth one until the screen is temporarily suspended. Then go around again two or more times, placing only alternate springs or bungee balls. This will permit the tension to be applied evenly around the screen and less subsequent adjustments will be required to obtain a perfectly flat surface.

For screens with curved frames
Use only minimum tension sufficient to hold screen in place at the sides in order to minimize reverse curvature in the center. With springs and bungee balls this can be accomplished by inserting them in every second or third grommet or fewer.
