Optimal Viewing Angles
The seating chart (below) shows an auditorium that follows the SMPTE's "2 & 6 Rule". The first row of seats are placed at a distance equal to twice the screen's width (seat distance from the screen = 2 x screen width) from the screen. The last row is placed equal to six times the screen width (seat distance from the screen = 6 x screen width). Further, no row of seats are wider than its distance from the screen. The seating area is represented by the dotted line. As you can see, this is a rather idealistic approach which eliminates most wide viewing angles. Under these conditions, all three of the major screen surfaces would perform well with the possible exception of the aluminized silver. The shaded areas represent those portions where some fall-off would occur and possibly become objectionable.

Most theatres do not follow the "2 & 6 Rule" and, as a result, we see seats closer to the screen and wider rows. This brings many wider viewer angles into play. Where 70 to 80% of your seats were within 20 degrees of center, now only 50 to 60% are. The aluminized screen would become less and less attractive and the available choices are now pearl and matte white. When the other factors are considered, one surface may appear to be the logical choice. For example, if wide angles will be frequently encountered, and the screen size and projection throw don't present illumination problems, the matte white would appear to be the optimal choice.

In the final analysis, it is important to realize that for any given application there may not be a clear choice as to which fabric to use. When all of the factors are weighted, there will be some indications but it is frequently a somewhat subjective choice. The goal is to have all of the necessary information to make the best choice.

Other factors in choosing a screen surface include:
