Technical Information
Gain: in the context of manufacturing motion picture screens, "gain" is defined as the ratio of brightness of a screen surface as compared to the brightness of the reference standard. The most common reference standard is a block of Magnesium Carbonate (MgCO3), and Hurley Screen's Matte White screen surface behaves identically to this standard--providing the viewing audience a consistent and uniform surface regardless of projection or viewing angle.
Since it is impossible for a screen to manufacture light, we rely on the gain of a screen to increase picture brightness. This is done by reflecting the largest portion of the light toward the audience which is especially useful with the larger screen formats.
Hurley Screen's manufacturing and quality control procedures provide the most consistent and even viewing surfaces in the industry today. In a controlled laboratory environment, we meticulously monitor the gain of all of our screen surfaces using our Goniophotometer. This instrument measures the true gain of our screen surfaces with an accuracy that can't be achieved using an averaging or spot meter in the field.
